Searching the blog
Searching instructions
Some of you have expressed complaints that the blog is hard to find things on. Well, let me help you with that.
If you look to the left you will find a column of helpful items. You will see that there is a "Search this Blog" feature to the left. If you click in the box and type in a key word like FREEWRITE or SSR the blog will find all of the instances of that word in the text and create a new clear window at the top of the blog with all of the posts containing that word displayed for you. This will help you find what you are looking for. Please take advantage of this.

Today, I handed out an open book, take home test. Please see me immediately if you did not get one.
In our culture of technology and 21st century skills, traditional ways of assessing student knowledge are out the window. So, I am trying this testing format, because I am expecting you to collaborate, read critically, paraphrase, summarize, and think outside of the box. The test looks like a traditional paper, pencil test, but the way you take it has changed. I want you to use your book. I want you to use your neighbor and if you think that this means that you can cheat. . . then think again. You may use your neighbor, but no two answers on the short and extended answer items should look exactly alike. THere is a dfference between copying and collaborating. I want you to collaborate. If I get two papers with identical answers to the short and extended answer items then both people will fail! I know you can't help but have the same answers on the multiple choice, but all of these multiple choice questions are complex and require you to think about each and every response, so I hope you will think and collaborate and come to a consensus.

Tuesday--Writer's Workshop Editing day
Freewrite #2
Today we looked at this painting by Asher Durand called "Kindred Spirits." Durand is one of the most famous Transcendentalist painters, and this is a prime example of his landscape painting. The two men in the painting are Durand and Thomas Cole who were instrumental in starting the Hudson River School (an art movement made up of transcendentalist painters). As you look at this painting write about whatever comes to mind. You can talk about the painting itself or you can merely use it as a jumping off place.

I'm sorry that this post is late. I should have put it up Friday night, but I forgot about it.
Friday was SSR. The topic for this week was to answer the question, "What does this text mean to me?" Text being whatever you read for SSR this week.
Over the weekend you were to do two 5 minute freewrites:

"Every hero becomes a bore at last."
"Every man alone is sincere; at the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins."

Happy writing!
Remember these freewrites should be in the journal section of your compostion book.

Wednesday: Transcendentalism
"Only when we stop stopping our lives, can we start starting our lives." Professor Whitman, Community
Today we are begining a study of Transcendentalism. If you are home sick, you are missing some great notes and lecture and a self-assessment of how transcendental you are.
If you missed the Writing Territories yesterday than the homework assignment for today will be really hard.
Homework
Get a timer of some sort and set it for 5 minutes. Write about one of your writing territories for the full 5 minutes. Do not stop writing! If you exhaust one topic move on to another of your writing territories.
I hope that all of you who are sick get well soon! We miss your smiling faces!

Writing Territories
In class today, we discovered our writing territories. Writing Territories are areas (territories) of interest to you that will hopefully help you find topics to write about.
Brainstorm some topics you are interested in writing about.
“These [writing territories] include subjects I‟ve written about or might like to, genres I‟ve written in or would like to try, and audiences for whom I write or would like to. The list of territories represents my self-portrait as a writer. Because I use it to model for kids to learn from, I try to make it personal, specific, diverse, and unpretentious: ideas of mine that might generate ideas of theirs.” --Nancie Atwell, In the Middle
Begin by thinking about your family.
1. What good stories could you tell about parents, grandparents, siblings?
2. What books do you like?
3. Where do you go to relax? Enjoy yourself? Can you descibe these places?
4. What political, social or cultural issues interest you?
Answer these questions in list form. Ask me and I'll show you mine so you can get a better idea of what I mean.
Writing Territories are different for each and every person. My territories are not the same as yours.

The job of this essay is to clarify an abstract idea such as—hope, democracy, wisdom, courage, wealth, poverty, ambition, death, destruction, or insecurity. You are to convince your reader of what makes your subject significant. The typical organization includes a dictionary definition, a personal anecdote about the subject being defined, an explanation of the subject in more detail including your viewpoints on how the definition fits into your life, culture, and society. Reflect on the word’s meaning and your personal thoughts on the word. Your paper should be persuasive in style. Your objective is to stir the conscience of your readers persuading them to incorporate or eradicate the abstract term you have chosen into or from their lives.
Your paper must include the MLA citation of the dictionary definition you include in your paper.

Keeping up!
Many of you are feeling overwhelmed this week with attending 3 funerals and the amount of work that has to be done before the end of the quarter (Friday). For Sammie
Some of you have asked me to share what I shared with my 5th hour class today.
Journal Entry 10/8/09
I lost my first student tonight. Sammie was tragically killed this afternoon in a car accident. I thought I would get to teach for a year or two before I experienced a tragedy like this, but here I am struggling with the death of a 16 year-old girl who was so spunky, vibrant, and full of life. My fifth hour class will not be the same without her smiling face. I'm thinking back through the conversations we had the past couple weeks. We talked about how many bobbypins she had to use to pull her hair back for ROTC uniform days. After class that day, I found a bobbypin under her desk. We talked about colorguard and we compared our sisters. She really was a special young lady with potential and definite leadership capabilities. I don't know how else to express my sadness over her loss. I walked into my own daughter's bedroom after I got off the phone with our principal and kissed my sleeping daughters hoping and praying for Sammie's Dad, Mom and siblings. I cannot imagine losing either of my girls and I cannot fathom the pain Sammie's parents are feeling tonight. I can't believe she's gone--how much more her family? They are in my prayers.
