2nd Quarter begins--Writer's Workshop

Writer’s Workshop is a research proven way to teach students to write effectively. My methods may be a little different than the way other teachers employ this technique, but I think we are going to learn a lot together in the weeks to come.
Parents: Below is the information that I gave out to the students today. Please support them in getting their work done.

Students: If you lose your papers you will need to print this blog out so that you have a copy for your folder.


The process

Each and every paper requires
2 peer edits
1 self edit
1 conference with me by email and or in person
When you conference with me, I must see all of your peer edits and self edits. If you have not done them, I will not look at your paper. NO EXCEPTIONS.


This is how the process works step by step.

7. Revise and highlight your changes
8. Conference with Mrs. Maschmeyer in person or by email
9. Final Revision and highlight your changes
10. Paper stamped for full credit

Suggested due dates:

You are required to write 5 papers between October 19, 2009 and the last day of the school year.

The order you do them in is up to you. I will refer to them as papers 1 through 5 so when I say paper 1 is due a specific time that does not mean that the first paper on this sheet is due that day.

2nd Quarter—10/19 through 12/18

       1 previous paper through Final Draft (step 10)

       1 required paper through Final Draft (step 10)

       1 paper of choice (either a required or a choice) paper through (step 5).

Portfolio checks

           10/22—Required folder with prewriting and drafting and composition book with freewrites (this check is a practice for what is to come)

           11/5—1 paper through step 6, 1 paper through step 5, 1 rough draft

           11/19—1 paper through step 10, 1 paper through step 6, 1 paper through step 3

           12/17—Final 2nd quarter portfolio check 1 previous paper through step 10, 1 required through Step 10, 1 paper of choice through step 5.



Paper Descriptions


2nd quarter through the end of the year
All papers must be at least 4 pages long. After the fourth page length is up to you.


Required Papers (must write all 4)

Definition/Reflection
               The job of this essay is to clarify an abstract idea such as—hope, democracy, wisdom, courage, wealth, poverty, ambition, death, destruction, or insecurity. You are to convince your reader of what makes your subject significant. The typical organization includes a dictionary definition, a personal anecdote about the subject being defined, an explanation of the subject in more detail including your viewpoints on how the definition fits into your life, culture, and society. Reflect on the word’s meaning and your personal thoughts on the word. Your paper should be persuasive in style. Your objective is to stir the conscience of your readers persuading them to incorporate or eradicate the abstract term you have chosen into or from their lives.

Your paper must include the MLA citation of the dictionary definition you include in your paper.


Career Research
          This paper is to be 3 pages in length.
Mr. Grauf will be helping with the research for this paper. We will be using career connection for a large part of the research.
Your paper must include MLA citation of the Career Connection website.

Compare /Contrast
          Choose a social, political, or cultural issue with two opposing sides. Compare and contrast the two sides of the issue and form an opinion on the matter. Persuade your reader that the opinion you have formed is the right one and attempt to win them to your side

(4 to 5 sources documented and varied—not all magazine or internet).
This paper should have as many sources as pages.



Creative Narrative (short story)
           Write a short story based on a actual event in your life or the life of someone you know (you might want to get their permission). Your short story must include the basic elements of plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion/resolution. You must include strong character development. Your reader must be able to understand your story both visually and emotionally. The strong short story is one of a kind. The storyline is not weak, predictable, or underdeveloped. Your personal experiences and strong observations will create your structure and your characters. Your story must take place within a 24 hour period and include at least one fully developed character. We will discuss plot creation and character development as well as finding inspiration in class.

You may replace any one of the required papers with the Author Biography PowerPoint project.

Author Biography PowerPoint Project.
           Choose an American author that you enjoy (someone you read) and develop a PowerPoint biography of his/her life and work. It must be at least 12 to 15 slides and include information about his or her birth, schooling, influences of other authors, occupation, inspiration to write, and what you personally enjoy about the author’s work. Include a works cited slide at the end of your presentation. Points will be given for layout and inclusion of graphics or sound. Note: Even though this is a PowerPoint, it still must be workshopped. You must present your PowerPoint to the class.

Choice Papers (must write 1 of choice)

Author Biography project
            Choose an American author that you enjoy and develop a PowerPoint biography of his/her life and work. It must be at least 10 to 12 slides and include information about his or her birth, schooling, influences of other authors, occupation, inspiration to write, and what you personally enjoy about the author’s work. Reader Response
                This essay is an analysis of literature based on the your, the reader’s, interaction with the text. When you read, the literature acts as an incentive to explore personal thoughts and feelings that develop while you are reading. How does the story, novel or poem relate to your thoughts, ideas feelings/emotions? Of what does the piece remind you? You may choose to pick a particular theme, quote, passage, or character from the work and relate it to your life.
*Honors* you must use literary element terminology to discuss the text as well as relate it to your own life. We will discuss literary elements in class.

Personal Narrative (Memoir)
            Write a short memoir about your role in or perspective on a significant event. Brainstorm a list of events that you have observed that made an impact on you or your community. Prepare an outline for their story that addresses the six essential questions related to the event: who, what, where, when, how and why. They should also keep the following questions in mind when writing their stories (written on the board for easier student access
• Why is this event significant to my peers and/or community?
• Why is it important that I participated in, witnessed or learned from the event?
• What can others learn from my account or interpretation?
Balance the facts as you recall them including language and details that relate the drama and suspense of the event. I have a handout with more information about writing this type of essay.

College Scholarship or Entrance Essay
       Essay must include requirements for the essay from the college or institution giving the scholarship. Length and requirements will vary according to

Essay of Place
             Write a descriptive essay about a place that has had some special meaning in your life—a place that is still a part of you. Provide specific physical details about the place, and explain how this place helped form you into the person you are today. As you get started, take a few minutes to think about how you want to order your essay: What will you summarize? What will you dramatize? Will you use chronological order or flashback?

Creative Poetry (5 poems or more)
See me for approval to do this project. I will have more information for you.


Honors Only:
Personal Literary analysis
         Write an essay analyzing one original poem of at least 20 lines and l essay. If you choose to write this paper, there is a specific outline I want you to follow. See me and I will give it to you. This paper could be beneficial to those who want to improve their poetry writing skills or intend to major in English in college.


NOTES:

There will be two folders in the black crates on the back counter that have peer-edit and self-edit sheets in them. When you complete a peer or self edit you must staple the sheet to the draft of your paper. When you conference with me, I must see all of your peer edits and self edits. If you have not done them, I will not look at your paper. NO EXCEPTIONS.

You must have 3 freewrites in your composition book per week, whether we do them in class or not.
Freewriting process: Write for 5 minutes without stopping. If you exhaust one topic move on to another. Just keep writing.

Schedule

Mondays will be computer lab days. On Mondays you will be able to type and do research, but you will not be allowed to play games. You do not have time to play games. You must print at the end of the hour and bring what you have worked on to class on Tuesday.

Tuesdays will have mini-lessons and freewrites. The rest of the class period will be time for you to conference with your peers and self edit and revise your work.

Wednesday and Thursday will be literature lessons

Friday will ALWAYS be SSR.
